Fairly was just a good, solid all-around MLB player. Nothing really great, but he had everything except speed, and until the end of his career even that was OK. He played an effective outfield when younger and increasingly as he aged became a firstbaseman (I know you know most of this, just rehearsing it). He could hit, a little bit of power, excellent plate discipline, would take a walk, and he was a smart student-of-the-game player. And, as you can tell, a collector of stories. As a broadcaster, he was the same.
