WCW et al.--Here's another scenario that befuddles me. Pitcher leads off in 8th inning or later, is pitching a low-scoring gem (a 1-0 shutout or 1-1 tie), is not at all fatigued, and his profile is set to "never" for pinch-hitters or relief pitchers (obviously, this applies only to early/mid-20th c. seasons). Pitcher, as batter, reaches first with no outs, and is immediately removed for a pinch-runner, often of dubious foot speed. In most cases the PRunner fails to score, a lesser hurler is brought into the game and POOF! the game is lost. In all my years of scanning early 20th c. boxscores and game accounts, I have never, ever encountered such a situation. That doesn't mean it never happened, of course, but in my experience it remains an extremely unusual occurrence.
And then, of course, there remains the ridiculous "strategy" of pitchers bunting while enjoying huge leads in later innings, a problem that was reputedly addressed and fixed in an earlier version but which persists still to my great annoyance.
