About 2 years ago Flood013 posted a series of messages reporting his research on the impact of fielding ratings. I thought it was very interesting and useful so I am going to copy his posts into this forum to make sure they remain available. Remember that while they will appear under my username, I had nothing to do with the research and all the credit goes to Flood013. Here's the first of his messages, with the rest to follow as the day goes on:
Sometime soon I will post, format permitting, the results of a little project began back in July 2007. The endeavor was basically a continuation of the Value of Defense study completed in 2005 by Gary Pearce (range) and myself (error rates) but with two significant differences. First, range and error rates were varied simultaneously, range from poor to excellent, error rates from 0 to 200 in increments of 25. In the 2005 analysis, one attribute was fixed (range at average or error rates at 100) while the other was varied. Second and perhaps more importantly, all possible scenarios involving position players being utilized at positions other than their own were included.
