The Cardinals' season has been somewhat grim, but St. Louis' first baseman defies the label by hitting in his 25th game in a row.

Charlie Grimm's 6th inning single had no bearing on the outcome of this game, but it extended his hitting streak to 26.

... and it wasn't even the big story of the game. That would be the brawl in the first inning between Pittsburgh catcher Val Picinich and St. Louis pitcher Jake Miller. Picinich missed the rest of the game and will be fined, but Miller will miss the next 3+ weeks (and also be fined).

In the secret room that only the Commissioner and Berg know of, there is a shelf of books that appear - to Berg - to be from the "future." In the one marked "1974" he finds that Hal McRae racked up a 35-game streak while playing for San Francisco.
In a book marked "1977," which just also happens to be on the reference shelf of the DMB public library, there is an account of Kansas City's Al Cowens' quest to match McRae's streak, which was stopped a game short by Bob Forsch of Detroit.

The Commissioner sat at his desk, head down and in his hands as he looked at the daily game reports his secretary had just delivered.
She stood in front of the desk, seeming to tower over her boss as she gently scolded him: "You knew this could happen. You knew yourself, and others warned you as well."
"Joanie, I just don't need that right now."
"Yes, you do need to hear it. It's not tough to figure out that this could happen with such small divisions."
"I know, I know. I knew a team could drop to .500 and still lead their division. But how in HELL do they lose 15 out of 16, and not ONE team in their division can catch up? NOT ONE!"
"You're the one who said that this kind of thing would even out, that it would fix itself by the end of the season. It's just July. There's time."
"I don't know. Maybe it was ALL a mistake."
"Now, just stop that. Will you feel better if I call you Damon?"
"Not now, Joanie. Not ... um, yeah, that would help."

The Detroit Tigers were the pre-season favorites to win the Great Lakes Division, and for the first half of the season they looked as if they would do so without breaking much of a sweat. Today, however, the hottest team in the League caught them, and the Cincinnati Reds now own a share of first.
In the Plains Division, the race - because someone HAS to "win" the division - has also become tied.

As July nears its end, the division matchups are starting to get serious. The Detroit Tigers started the season as big favorites in the Great Lakes Division, and spent most of the first half living up to expectations. July has been a tough month for the Motor City, and the Cincinnati Reds arrive in Detroit for a three game series with a record of 58-41 to put them a game up on the home team (57-42).
Probable pitchers:
July 24: Cin - Red Ruffing (6-5, 3.34) vs. Det - Pete Donohue (11-5, 4.36)
July 25: Cin - Johnny Wertz (11-5, 3.72) vs. Det - Lefty Grove (9-6, 2.94)
July 26: Cin - Milt Gaston (6-7, 2.65) vs. Det - Herb Pennock (9-7, 3.85)
Cincinnati reports no injuries; Detroit's Muddy Ruel is day-to-day, expected to miss at least the first game.
Detroit leads the season series 8-7.

The Tigers jumped on Reds starter Red Ruffing early and often, and while Cincinnati would make it close in the end the home team hung on for the win and a tie atop the Great Lakes Division.
