Frank Robinson won the triple crown with a 332 BA, 52 HR and 124 RBI.
Eddie Watt led in ERA at 2.20
Jim Kaat led in wins with 25
Sam McDowell was the leader in strikeouts with 266 in 224 IP ( He also led in walks with 127) and a lot of batters did not want to dig in with Sam on the mound as he was 2nd in the league with 9 hit batters. Can you say that will leave a mark.
Frank Robinson was the easy choice for the voters as AL MVP as he did win the triple crown.
The Cy Young Award was tougher as Luis Tiant, Jim Kaat, Sandy Koufax and Mike Cueller all got votes. Finally after it looked like a stalemate one voter suggested two Cy Young Awards (one for each league) and
this motion was easily approved. That narrowed it down to Luis Tiant the best Statistical pitcher and Jim Kaat. Since Jim Kaat was 2nd to Tiant in the important categories (CERA and WHIP) and since Tiant was 9-11

Here are the National League Award winners
Matty Alou was the batting champ at 345
Hank Aaron led in HR and RBIs (53 and 141)
Mike Cuellar led in ERA at 2.17
Sandy Koufax led with 26 wins and in strikeouts with 299
Since the voters decided to have a separate Cy Young for both leagues Sandy Koufax was the easy choice. He was 26 and 7 with a 3.08 ERA. He also pitched 298 innings. Mike Cuellar was the Sabermetrics choice as he had the best CERA and led in WHIP. Since the vast majority of voters had not even heard of sabermetrics both of the sabermetric fans were shown to the door and Sandy was easily elected the Cy Young Award. In a surprise announcement Sandy Koufax said that the cold San Francisco air bothered his arm and he had to pitch all year with a sore arm so he is retiring for health reasons. NL batters were jubilant but they had a hard time believing he could pitch this well with a sore arm.
The NL MVP was a tougher call. Hank Aaron , Richie (Dick) Allen, Ron Santo and Willie Mays all got
some support from the voters. Hank Aaron and Dick (Don't call me Richie) Allen were eliminated because they played for losing teams. Willie Mays then easily won over Ron Santo.
In another surprise development Bob (I must be in the front row) Uecker again did not receive any
votes for MVP despite posting a .203 BA with 6 HR and 22 RBI. His highlight for the year
was getting ejected for arguing balls and strikes with the line that pitch was just a
bit outside.

With Atlanta down 3 games to 1 they threw their ace Claude Osteen out while Minnesota could afford
to send out #4 starter Tommy John (10-13 4.00 ERA). That way they would have their two 20 game winners (Jim Kaat and Joe Horlen) ready for games 6 and 7 if needed.

Jim Kaat allowed a 1st inning run after Vada Pinsons triple and Jack Fisher pitched 5 strong innings.
Then things began to unravel for the Braves as Harmon Killebrew hit a RBI single which was followed by Tony Conigiaro's 3 run homer. 2 insurance runs in the 8th and then just a Wille Mays solo shot in the 9th. Jim Kaat's complete game did in the Braves and the Twins follow up their 1965 World Series loss with a win.
For his two wins plus the clutch 2 run double Fritz Peterson is your 1966 World series MVP and he will get to drive home a brand new 1966 Chevy Corvette. When asked how long he plans to keep the car Fritz replied "you never know as swapping cars is easy. People swap them all the time. It is not like swapping wives or something"
