Leading the series 6 games to 4, The Indians take 2 of the last 3 to finish off the 1940 Reds 8 games to 5.
Game 11: In a back and forth game that saw four lead changes or ties, light hitting Harry Craft hit a two run homer in the top of the 10TH to put Cleveland ahead 6-4. With one out in the bottom of the 10TH, Kenny Lofton tripled and then Carlos Baerga doubled to make it 6-5 with one out. Joe Beggs(SV12) came on to relief Bucky Walters(11-11) and calmly retired Manny Ramirez and Albert Belle to secure the win.
Game 12: Kenny Lofton tripled and hit a Home Run as he went 3-4 with 2 runs to lead Cleveland to a 4-2 win.
Game 13: Harry Craft had a bases loaded infield single in the bottom of the 1ST for a 1-0 Reds lead. In the top of the 2ND Omar Vizquel hit into a one out fielder's choice to plate Manny Ramirez and a 1-1 tie. The game remained that way as both team missed scoring chances thru eight innings and Dennis Martinez and Julian Taveras for the Indians and Jim Turner for the Reds matched each other with zero's to keep the score 1-1.
In the top of the 9TH, Joe Beggs relieved for Cincinnati and quickly retired the first two batters. Paul Sorrento then pinch hit for Julian Taveras and walked and then with the two out, Kenny Lofton doubled to deep left to score Sorrento and put Cleveland ahead 2-1. Carlos Baerga then grounded out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 9TH, Jose Mesa(SV22) came in to pitch and worked around a one out walk to finish off the Reds and make The Cleveland Indians the tournament champions.
The Indians won all seven series they played and finished 56-33. They scored 475 runs in the 89 games for a 5.34 average per game. Albert Belle hit 23 homers and Paul Sorrento added 22. Jim Thome had 66 RBI, and the veteran Eddie Murray had a .360/.426/.954 slash line to contribute as well.
The Indians had a very respectable 3.27 ERA. Orel Hershiser went 11-5 with a 3.17 ERA and Jose Mesa was 1-0 with 22 saves in 22 save chances and a 0.42 ERA.
